What to Ask as You Consider Retirement Communities for Active Adults

While you’ll find an amazing number of retirement community types these days, it’s true that many people still have the misconception that all of them are the same—and not in a good way.

Thoughts of being stuck in a hospital-like atmosphere where sad people spend most of their hours cooped up in small shared rooms (never with a roommate they like, either) or confined to bed still come to mind for a majority of folks facing retirement.

Luckily, nothing could be further from the truth in 2019—especially for retirees who don’t have current regular care needs and are looking to downsize in order to maximize their free time and enjoyment of life. Independent living communities, like the Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) and Life Plan Communities we serve here at Explore Retirement Living offer comfortable and innovative housing options and fun things to do for active adults every day. And they expect and encourage residents to come and go as they please!

But how do you determine whether retirement community living is right for you? (more…)

Great Retirement Jobs for Seniors in Lancaster County and Beyond

For as long as you can remember, you’ve worked in some capacity. Maybe you started with chores on the family farm as a child, or if you grew up in town, perhaps you ran errands for neighbors or shoveled snow off the sidewalks in winter to earn some pocket change. You then worked in a full-time job or career throughout your adult life, probably also while you were raising a family. It was a lot of work, but it was fulfilling, too.

Now, in retirement, you may have found yourself technically “unemployed” for the first time in your life, and you’re realizing it just doesn’t feel right—you have too much time on your hands or maybe you enjoy having that extra spending money to put toward your favorite hobbies or buy little gifts for the grandkids. Whatever your reasoning, working in retirement can be an enjoyable and fulfilling endeavor. And here in Lancaster County, there are many opportunities to keep busy while earning a nice little paycheck to go along with the effort.

Today’s post gives you some general ideas about new paths you might take as a worker in retirement. After all, there is no need to only pursue work related to your former profession or acquired skillsets—now is the time to try something new that you know you will enjoy! (more…)

Lancaster County’s Restaurant Scene: So Much More than Smorgasbords!

For people who love to eat, Lancaster County has long been a destination. World famous among visitors to the area for endless buffets and delicious PA Dutch specialties and desserts, there weren’t always many options available for “fancy” dining, as “plain” food was the profitable tourist draw. However, Lancaster City and its surrounding towns have recently been building a serious restaurant scene to rival much larger metropolitan regions.

This restaurant revolution has been somewhat quiet, and unless you’re a local, you may not have realized just how many great new eateries have opened in the last decade. Here at the end of the 2010s, you can now find everything from authentic tacos and Thai cuisine to wine bars and Southern-style barbeque. And while the scene has expanded most rapidly in downtown Lancaster (a robust 79% growth trend since 2008), every section of Lancaster County has welcomed new dining establishments.

So, what are some of your best bets that don’t involve all-you-can-eat mashed potatoes and buttered noodles? (more…)

Top 8 Things that Make Lancaster PA Unique

Lancaster County and the central City of Lancaster it surrounds are places like no other.

A unique history that includes a (very short) stint as the capital of the United States in its earliest days, as well as a deep-rooted agricultural tradition, thanks to some of the most fertile farmland in North America, make this place special.

Lancaster is home to a large Plain sect population, as well, and the humbleness of these people make it so most non-locals might not discover our uniqueness on their own. In that spirit, today we’re doing a little bragging about sets the Lancaster region apart to show why it makes such a great place to call home. (more…)

We have long known it to be true, but U.S. News and World Report just confirmed it – Lancaster is the #1 place in the entire country to retire in 2019!

Up from 2nd place in this year’s rankings, Lancaster gets great marks for housing affordability, and especially its healthcare resources. Other factors considered to determine scoring were things like happiness, desirability, retiree taxes, and the job market in the local area. To celebrate our “win” this year, we’re taking a closer look at how Lancaster shines in some of the most significant areas that these rankings considered, specifically healthcare access, value/affordability, and overall quality of life. (more…)
