Today’s post continues our highlight series about the Lancaster area’s superb performing arts centers with a profile of American Music Theatre.
Simply shortened to “AMT” by most locals, American Music Theatre is a bit different in format and overall style than both our previously reviewed venues—Downtown Lancaster’s Fulton Theatre and nearby Sight & Sound Theatres.
While the Fulton is dedicated to staging hit Broadway musicals and critically acclaimed plays, and Sight & Sound exclusively produces its own Bible-based original shows, AMT is a little less niche in its programming. It brings touring popular music acts, comedians, and dance performers to its stage, but also presents many of its own unique shows each year, including a highly anticipated annual Christmas show—2019’s Joy to the World opens November 1st!
Here is everything you need to know about AMT before you go.
The AMT Mission & Experience
For visitors to Lancaster County, it’s likely that the American Music Theatre is the most visible and conveniently located theatre. If you’ve ever come to experience the traditional tourist fare based along and around the Lincoln Highway east of Lancaster City—shop the Tanger and Rockvale Outlets, take the kids and grandkids to Dutch Wonderland, or tour the Amish Farm and House, for instance—you’ve ventured by and/or seen AMT. But have you checked out a show?
AMT bills itself as “the only theatre of its kind in the country that features both touring concerts and Original Shows,” and the theatre’s stated mission speaks to its intention to be a collaborative member of an artistic community that it both promotes and participates in actively.
Browsing the theatre’s show schedule in any given month, you’ll certainly discover an eclectic mix of in-house shows (running mainly on weekdays, April-December) and concerts by some of the biggest names in country, rock/pop, and even gospel music!
The venue itself features an impressive 1,600-seat auditorium that promises show-goers a great view of the stage no matter where you’re comfortably seated in the house. After all, the sound and lighting capabilities at AMT are state-of-the-art.
AMT’s Family-Friendly Original Shows
If you’re looking for exhilarating musical revues that are unlike anything else, AMT delivers. While their original shows might be compared to those you can experience in Las Vegas, each one is designed to appeal to an all-ages audience—from kids experiencing their first live theatre show to those seasoned theatre enthusiasts who’ve seen countless productions across the USA.
According to AMT, they audition world-class performers both in Lancaster and NYC to recruit only the highest quality talent for their shows. These original productions thrill audiences thanks to the “professional vocalists and dancers, expert lighting and sound technicians, seasoned set designers, and world-class musicians” who are attracted to the theatre’s reputation for creative and career-enhancing opportunities. Many of these talented individuals are already Broadway veterans, too.
There is no doubt that any original show you choose to see at AMT will be an immersive spectacle that will have your whole family wanting to come back again!
Now Playing & Shows Coming Soon
Through early October 2019, AMT is staging their original show, Ovation – An AMT Pops Orchestra Experience. Singers and dancers join the versatile orchestra on stage to present an inspiring “musical journey” through pop and classical pieces that everyone will recognize and adore—from Gershwin to Sinatra to Adele!
As mentioned earlier, AMT’s beloved Christmas Show opens on November 1st. Joy to the World features quaint scenes of hometown winter nostalgia and plenty of fun Christmas surprises to delight kids of all ages! All of your favorite Christmastime tunes like “Jingle Bells” and “Hark, The Herald Angels Sing” will be presented in a joyful pageant of song and dance—you won’t want to miss this show!
Beyond the unique original productions coming soon, you’ll also discover a diverse array of well-known performers like country stars Sara Evans and Vince Gill, The Beach Boys, and Three Dog Night. And the kids in your life will be thrilled to go on an adventure with their friend Peppa Pig in Peppa Pig Live! on September 20th. Get your tickets for all of these—and more—online at AMT’s ticketing site now.
